Here’s issue 4 of the Boot Room Weekly Round-Up:
New boot of the week: Puma One 18.1 – RRP £180 – £190 (depending on sole choice)

Puma has recently launched their new Puma One boot in a traditional looking Black/Silver/Red colourway. With these boots Puma aim to deliver the 3 F’s of Fit, Fast and Feel. The stretch evoKnit sock provides support and a snug FIT. The FAST element is delivered by the lightness of the boot and the bladed and conical studded sole units and the super soft kangaroo leather provides the FEEL. Our only gripe with these is that in our opinion the Puma Formstripe logo is just a little too short and needs to come a little further down the boot…but that’s just a tiny niggle.
These will be worn by the likes of Sergio Aguero, Hector Bellerin and Olivier Giroud. Aguero debuted the One 18.1 in spectacular fashion last week by scoring a hat-trick against Newcastle United.

Vintage boot of the week: Patrick Michel Platini

Much like the Puma Step Star from a recent issue of the Round Up the Patrick Michel Platini were another pair of boots that were highly sought after in our school days. Patrick was a relative newcomer to the UK football boot market and at the time they represented something a bit different to the ubiquitous adidas or Puma boots. We’d seen Patrick boots adorning the feet of Kevin Keegan in the late 70’s but it wasn’t until the Casual boom of the early to mid-80s that Patrick really gained some serious brand recognition. Patrick cagoules, Patrick squash shoes and the Patrick Liverpool endorsed indoor football shoes were all desirable items at our school and as such the boots carried some kudos. Add to this the fact that arguably the worlds best footballer was wearing them helped make them even more sought after.

Despite Keegan being less than complimentary about Patrick boots in his autobiography – claiming that he only wore them for the money and wasn’t a big fan of them – these Platini endorsed boots were a cut above any of their other offerings. They were made with super soft leather and the flashes of white along the eyestays , the red arches, the distinctive heel branding and the white indents on the tongue were all distinguishing features of this great boot that ensured that they stood out on the shelves of your local sports shop, in the changing rooms and on the pitch.

If we recall correctly, one real drawback of these and other Patrick boots was that they had their own stud fixings and that normal studs didn’t fit – you had to buy Patrick branded studs if you needed to replace any.

Vintage shirt of the week – Le Coq Sportif AS Saint Etienne Home shirt – 1981-84 – €90 Buy It Now
Whenever we see this shirt our mind immediately sees Platini (see the pics below) in his pomp. ‘Les Verts’ have had numerous great kits across their history but this one just edges the tricolore trimmed one from the late 70’s for us. At the time, and arguably still now, this shirt reeks of continental style and glamour – the contrast filled collar, the double pinstripe hoops, the ‘cotton’ type fabric used and the oversized felt flock sponsor just all work so well together.

Offering an amazing 85% saving on the RRP, these Puma evoSPEEDs provide great value for money. These would be a decent boot for someone looking for a decent pair of mouldeds for use on hard ground or artificial surfaces. There’s still a decent size run of these available on MandMDirect but be quick as we doubt they will hang around for long at this price!

eBay finds of the week
- In the days before home video tapes, DVD;s and YouTube if you wanted to relive your teams glory moments you either had to wait for one of the 3 TV stations to show the game for some reason in their schedule, which very rarely, if at all, ever happened, the only real alternative was to listen to the match commentary on vinyl. We’ve been searching for a couple of games recently, to no avail, but have found these ones…
